The first modding phase of this project began when I ran acrossan old and broken coin operated newspaper dispenser that was destined for the trash heap. The Dallas Morning News has hundreds of these boxes all over the Dallas / Ft.Worth metroplex; sometimes they get broken or damaged and, rather than spend lots of money having them repaired, they choose to buy new ones to replace them with. The ones that aren't too badly damaged they donate to local colleges and other places that may use them for their own purposes. That is where this particular box came to me from, literally pulled from the trash.
The box itself is quite large, roughly 30" wide by 24" deep by 48" high along with being quite heavy. The initial disassembly of the box revealed a large solid concrete block, roughly 60 pounds, bolted onto the bottom of the box to keep it from blowing over, floating away during a flood, or deter from being stolen. Then I removed all of the spring loading mechanism that was used to keep the newspapers inside and easy to reach.
The next parts in line for the axe were the coin mechanism and all of the excess bits and bolts that were no longer necessary. After all this gutting, I managed to get this old girl down to approximately 1/4 of her original weight, which was much more manageable for the constant travel the box would be required for.
This old newspaper vending machine had many of the requirements I needed for the 'Lan Party in a Box' already in its design. It had plenty of size for everything, along with the durability of good quality steel and quality construction. The box also had security features built in for the protection of the newspapers and more importantly the coin mechanism area. This box had almost everything I needed to get this Lan Party Box idea started.
